Day 7 On board (Monday)
6.30am wake up call....as we are having
an early breakfast.
Off to the Mud room by 8.30am to have a
big stretch on Fredericksdal with trying to find Musk ox (sheep)
Saw them up in the distance but the
only group that got up close and personal were the strenuous group.
They got really close.
It was a glorious morning with little
breeze and gorgeous sunshine.
Everyone took a few layers off as it
was getting a bit warm, although on the way back down to the beach it
all started going back on!! we were introduced to some native
blueberries.....yummy!
Back to the ship for Lunch at 11.30 .
we had the most amazing sights for Lunch....fantastically large Ice
bergs.....incredible. Imagine that only 10% of it is above water ,
what would it be like underneath????
This afternoon we have another walk.
Evan is going on a 5 hour walk up the side of a mountain Martin
Karlsen Bugt, Nordvestfjord and will be picking them up on the other
side. I was going to do it but you have to be fast and I am worried
I would slow them down...so I am going with Terri and Greg in the
Moderate group..
Evan here after making the grade. Some
stats We reached a maximum of 640 metres covered about 12km. No one
has ever walked this area before to anyone’s knowledge not even our
guides they were going off satellite and contour maps only. So no
marked tracks just very rocky, icy hot and cold weather. We were a
group of 22 surrounded by 3 guides with rifles plenty of Muskoxs to
see who kill more people in Greenland than Polar Bears hence the
rifles. Saw two Muskoxs head butting each other for their next
seasons mating rites. It took us awhile to manoeuvre around the
Muskoxs they kept going in the same direction as us. We were trying
to push them down the mountain but they kept going higher. We decided
to head back down the mountain and cross over an icy stream and
approach from another direction. Finally cleared the Muskoxs and
headed up to our peak of 640m. The top of the pass reminded me of the
Pilbara area apart from the icy filled stream and ice on top of the
mountains. Once we were on the flats came across a large lake that
didn’t show on the maps and a smaller one starting to ice over.
When we reached the other side of the pass came across a magnificent
view of all the icebergs in the Fjord with the Greenland icecap in
the background which can't be seen by the Ship. When our ship finally
came around the corner it looked like a small bath toy next to the
icebergs. When we finally descended the zodiac had just arrived so it
was a dry boarding and back to the ship for a shower and a few beers.
Certainly one of my highlights so far.
