Day 5 Onboard ( Saturday)
Up again at 5.30am, got up and dressed
and headed to the lounge, left Evan snoring!!
Breakfast at 8am. Getting rugged up to
enjoy some fresh air outside.
More lectures today. 1st
one is on Trapping, seals etc. we didn’t get very far into it when
an announcement come over that there were Whales off the ships bow.
A mass exodus began...Poor Bob!!
We were told that the pod was around 50
to 100 whales....Humpbacks, Minke and some fin whales...mostly
Humpbacks. You just didn’t know where to look, they were all
around us feeding on the plankton.
The sun was shining, the wind dropped
and everywhere were whales blowing and dipping back into the
ocean...showing us their flukes(tails). A couple of the humpbacks
come right close to our ship and checked us out....
We have been so blessed with the
wildlife , more than I could ever have imagined. Just need to see a
killer whale and a polar bear and all will be complete.
I’m typing this and watching ice
sculptures float pass our cabin window. So surreal.
We went into a Fjord system this
afternoon using maps from 70 years ago ( this was the last time this
area was chartered). The size of the mountains on either side of us
with a light dusting of snow is just awe inspiring.
I leant over the side of the ship and
watched the ship go through the ice, very hypnotising. It was bloody
freezing!!!!
We couldn’t anchor here for the night
as the chain was approx 50metres to short. So we headed out , during
this the fog settled in around us and become so thick. No Northern
lights tonight....Over night we had made our way to another Fjord
system.
