Day 9 Tuesday
Wake up was 7am. Breakfast at 7.30.
Our expedition today was cancelled due
to weather. We didn’t go out until after lunch...we were in group
1 so we went out a bit later to have a Zodiac cruise around the
icebergs before being dropped off at Bear islands. Terri, Evan and I
went up the side of the mountain to the top ...what an amazing look
out at the top. The view down was so calm and peaceful...the kayak’s
had the most amazing calm ocean for them this afternoon. We were
starting to come back down when we went in search of Muskox yet
again. We saw them in the distance and also a Arctic Hare....but he
just looked like a white dot!!
It was a good walk down as the moss was
very spongy ….so not as hard on the knees. Suited up and back onto
the Zodiacs and to the ship. Dinner at 8pm.
Slept really well that night and didn’t
even stir when the announcement for the Northern lights....which
apparently they were awesome and the best so far.
Day 10 Wednesday
Breakfast at 7.30am.
At 9am our group headed to the Mud room
to suit up to be taken to the landing sight for our Moderate Fast
walk. We were to be away for 3 ½ hours. It was pretty much
straight up....
Thank goodness we got to stop a few
times. My trick was not to look up too much and just follow the feet
in front of me....thankfully they went at my pace, slow and steady!!
But we got to the top and had fantastic
view of the Eielson Glacier. We heard a few thunder typoe noises but
no bits of the glacier came away. We however did see the Muskox
again. A group of 5, one being a baby. This was the closest we had
seen them. And they were such good photographic models by placing
themselves neatly in a row and looking at us.
Now the hard bit, to go down. We
started down and then our guide took off to see if we could go down
the gully we were walking down. Most of us decided to stay where we
were , just in case we had to go back up. And guess what?? We did
have to go back up. And we went back they way we came. Of my good
ness my knees were sore by the time we got tot the beach. I couldn’t
do the walk in the afternoon...my knees were to swollen. So I rested
and Evan went out to tackle the gorges at Rodepynt. They were only
supposed to be out for 1 hour but they were gone for 2 hours.
So Evan here. Terri and I were still
energetic after the mornings hike so we were back on the zodiacs to
the gorge. When you thought Greenland couldn’t offer any more
variation in the terrain it surprises you again with this huge gorge
cut through thousands of years ago with flowing water through land
that was formed millions of years ago when the continents were
joined. It reminds me of the Bungle Bungles apart from frozen
waterfalls and flowing iced water. Walking on some of the ice is
tricky but with caution you get through. Once out we headed for an
iceberg which was close to land with the occasional seal popping its
head out. Then back to the ship just in time for another four course
meal.
