Day 6 onboard Sunday
Woke up to the ship not rolling....
Breakfast at 7am this morning as we
needed to be on the Zodiacs by 8.30am. Beach landing and then split
into our groups. We were in Moderate. Lots of patches or
snow/ice.....so exciting felt like a little kid!!
Headed off with our guide in front of
is and one at the back, both with rifles and flair guns.
Some very fertile tundra here.
Basically it was a jungle....by Greenland standards anyway. We
stepped through some very deep drifts almost up to our knees. I
managed to get Terri to walk across one and down she went!! we got
told off by one older gentlemen for having too much frivolity!! I'm
sure he was joking.
At one point during our trek we split
again into two groups.....Evan and I went in the faster group.
I was following everyone's footprints
in the deep drift when I got stuck...so had to crawl along for a few
steps until I could get out...( silently embarrassed and also for the
person behind me having to put up with my bum!!)
We were all sweaty even though the wind
was quite chilly. I wish I had a tap on my nose. It just wouldn’t
stop dripping.
We were ashore for approx 2 hours. We
saw Arctic fox and Musk ox tracks in the snow...just no sightings of
the animals.
Back to the landing site, life jackets
on and boarded the Zodiacs then onto the ship for a nice hot shower.
Lunch at 12.30pm, buffet style.
We are going ashore this afternoon to
Ittoqqoortoormiit. The school children are going to show us around
their school, plus they are going to go aboard our ship for afternoon
tea....we might have some left for us when we return. Lol
We walked around and saw the church,
old peoples home, the cemetery , what a view from there. Terri and I
had a snowball fight on the road....was bloody cold when it got into
your top!! but so much fun. Walked down to see the dogs being fed.
The guy that owns them is form the UK and had a dream to what he is
doing …..he has 22 dogs and they are gorgeous. We weren’t
allowed to pat them as they are working dogs and if one had of bitten
anyone it would have to be put down.
Walked up to the Tourist
Office...bought some gorgeous postcards and they are being posted On
Monday....went down to the Zodiac site and back to the ship for
afternoon tea. Looking back towards the village it had a Swedish
look about it, very colourful too. Apparently the locals found a
polar bear feeding on a beluga whale around in the next bay, so crew
were disparately trying to get everyone on-board so we could make our
way there. We got there and went outside. After spending 15 min
looking in the wrong spot I finally saw the blob up on some
rocks.....the locals had scared it off so it was no longer on the
shore!!! It wasn’t until the man next too me showed me his picture
I knew where too look!! Evan's picture when zoomed in you can see his
nose and eyes. He was sleeping off his big feed.
Was exciting but we are all hoping to
see one walking and not so far away!!
The northern lights were out in force
last night. I didn’t rouse but Evan did and took yet some more
shots...
